How Tankless Hot Works

September 2022 Article.

As the name suggests, there is no tank, so you are not boiling the kettle all day for two cups of coffee!

We get asked on a daily basis by customers about "instant hot water".  Normally it is by customers who have a tank or storage hot water and theyare in the need of a new hot water system.  They have heard about these small, compact continuous flow hot water systems by friends and they ask if they should be getting one.

Firstly a bit of a history lesson.  We hear them being called by all names, however we like to call them continuous flow or tankless.  They used to be called instantaneous systems decades ago and many people did not have great experiences with these old systems.

Let me assure you they have improved dramatically in the last 30 years. We do not call them instant hot water systems because although the hot water system starts heating straight away (virtually instantly), the water has to get from the hot water system to the tap you are using.  It depends on the length of pipe as to how long the hot water takes.

Check out some of our previous installation case studies, you will see most of our gas continuous flow installations are generally with Rinnai B26's or Rheem 26 Metro's.  Click here

There is no tank

  • - The system senses water flow and the flame ignites
  • - Water begins to be heated as it passes through the heat exchanger
  • - Water continues to heated as long as the tap is turned on
  • - Water exits the unit and travels to the tap at the desired temperature
  • - Flame output adjusts as needed to maintain water temperature during use
  • - With usage complete, the flame turns off and water stops flowing
  • - When the system is not in use, no gas is used.
