Home >> What is a Heat Pump
September 2022 Article.
They work like a refrigerator in reverse. They use refrigeration technology and work by taking heat out of the surrounding air and transferring that heat to water. They work and sound just like a split system air conditioner. They are more popular today because the Governments are paying rebates for people to get their old electric hot water systems replaced.
If you are environmentally conscious you should look at what type of refrigerant some models use and if they have an element and how this is used as ultimately these may be the deciding factors in determining which model you choose.
Some units have a back up element also, so you should take this into consideration if you are replacing an element hot water as this may defeat the purpose of what you are trying to achieve by installing a heat pump.
They are cheaper to run than a conventional electric hot water system because they use less power to provide a same amount of heated water. For people with a larger array of PV panels you can virtually heat your hot water for free.
When in use, they make noise, just the same as an air conditioner does, sometimes noisier. The noise levels vary between models so if the unit is to be located near a bedroom or close to neighbours then this should be taken into consideration. On some models you can change the setting parameters so that the unit heats at times that suit you. Some even have smartphone apps that you can control from your device.
